Public Meeting: Developing A Community Plan For St Ann's

In 2016, two-thirds of the St Ann's hospital site is to be sold off. Current proposals, which have received outline planning permission, are for 470 homes to be built by a private developer, with only 14% of these homes classed as 'affordable'. These proposals seem to take no account of the needs of the local community at a time of severe housing need and pressure on local health services.

South Tottenham Community Development Group (STCDG) has been established by local residents who believe that we can do better than this. In Haringey, we have seen successful community-led initiatives such as at  Wards Corner (http://wardscorner.org/)  or the Antwerp Arms (http://www.antwerparms.co.uk/) showing that there is an alternative to top-down development driven by profits for private developers rather than local needs. In Tower Hamlets, the disused St Clements Hospital site was taken over by a Community Land Trust to provide affordable homes in perpetuity (for more info see:  http://www.eastlondonclt.co.uk/#/st-clements/4576878498). Across the country, there are many examples of local groups winning community control over assets of community value.

Inspired by these examples, STCDG is calling a public meeting to involve local people in developing a community plan, with a view to putting together an alternative bid for the site. The group aims to develop a plan that takes account of local needs in housing, health, employment and community benefit.

There will be speakers, and a chance to discuss what we all want to see on the site, to develop it as a asset for the community. Refreshments will be provided.

All  welcome. Those unable to attend are invited to contact us with their ideas for St Ann's
